Hospitality Symbol
|
The Pineapple has long been regarded internationally as the hospitality symbol of cities, bed & breakfasts, hotels and restaurants.
Originally, a pineapple was put out on the fence posts of homes in seaport towns to let sailors know there was a room available. If people had 'company' a pineapple was placed on top of the four poster bed, then when the visitors had overstayed their welcome the pineapple was removed - this was a polite hint to leave!

About the Grahamstown Hospitality Guild
In addition to the year-round permanent B&B/Guest House/Self Catering and Homestay accommodation, there is a vast amount of ad-hoc accommodation which is used over peak periods e.g National Arts Festival and Rhodes Graduation. There are a number of "Festival Booking Agents" who arrange accommodation for visitors over these peak periods.
All of our members, both B&B/Guest house/Self Catering and Homestay owners and Festival Agents, subscribe to a code of conduct which gives the assurance to visitors that the member has the interest of the guest at heart.
Please note that we do not prescribe to our members as to the rates they charge but, in the guild's view, those people who charge rates according to their grading category will be giving guest's value for their money.
PLEASE NOTE – The National Arts Festival is High Season in Grahamstown and rates are usually 10% higher than at other times.
